Whisky La Durance, known for its organic Single Malt Whisky in the heart of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, is traveling back in time for its latest release. The producer unveiled Pastis La Durance, a new organic spirit designed to recreate the authentic taste of the early 20th century.
The goal was simple but ambitious: to produce a pastis exactly as it would have tasted in the Roaring Twenties. To achieve this, they unearthed an authentic antique recipe and applied it with strict discipline, using 100% organic ingredients.
The spirit undergoes a four-week maturation period in glass demijohns (dames-jeannes), a traditional method that allows the flavors to marry perfectly. The result is a Pastis La Durance that is worlds apart from the industrial counterparts: it’s aromatic, completely sugar-free, and unapologetically old-school.
The visual identity of the bottle reflects this return to roots. The design is sober and monochromatic, utilizing a vintage typeface that echoes the aesthetics of the 1920s and 30s. Inside the bottle, however, the liquid is surprisingly colorful. Pastis La Durance pours a natural red, derived entirely from the maceration process rather than artificial dyes. When water is added, it clouds over (the louche effect), like most Pastis.

The recipe itself is a complex herbal bouquet. Alongside the classic trio of water, alcohol, and star anise (badiane), Whisky La Durance infuses green anise, licorice, and cinnamon. All ingredients are certified organic.
This release marks an diversification for Whisky La Durance, proving that their expertise extends well beyond whisky.
